Crash Landing
Folly Ever After
What’s happening folks?
This is going to be a snappy newsletter because there is not a lot to report. I’m back in Australia and the weather is a bit grim and grizzly, but on the bright side of life (got to keep focusing on the positive) it means I am finally knuckling down to editing my current manuscript — Folly.
Here is a little peek at the opening lines:
Babette gawps at her reflection in the hair salon’s mirror.
“You look stunning!” says Katie, her hairdresser, giving Babette’s hair a final zhuzh.
Stunned more like.
For the last fifteen minutes, while Katie has been blow drying her hair, panic has been mounting and Babette now wishes she possessed the fantastical powers of one of their fictitious characters, so she might reverse time and restore her hair to its original perfectly respectable shade of brown.
“You don’t like it?” asks Katie, lips puckering.
Put it this way, Babette thinks she’d look less stunned if she’d woken up from a nightmare with her knickers around her ankles mid-pee on the pavement outside.
She swallows. “Well…” In truth, Babette hates it. Hates every follicle and split end. Hates the stupid head it sits upon and the vain idiot inside that numb-skull. At this precise moment, she hates every minutiae of her miserable existence. And though, being one half of the successful writing duo, W.E.Wolfe, she literally has a reputation for being something of a hell-raiser, in reality she feels utterly defeated. No amount of Zhuzhing is going to buoy her spirits.
Thoughts? I’m scared to know, but please feel free to ping me your feedback.
While we’re on the subject of sneak peeks (and swiftly moving on), here are a few more photos from my UK visit. I couldn’t resist a little detour to peek at this place … Do you recognise it???

Back to the present and life in Australia, I am also attempting to salvage my fitness after too much feasting while staying in the UK — going to be an uphill battle if ever there was one!
What do you folks do to keep fit?
As some of you may know, I used to do a lot of sea swimming, even in winter, but the water looks frigid and it seems to have lost its appeal for me at present. Call me a wuss, but right now I’m out of the habit of sea swimming and can’t quite face it. It’s brrrr — no thanks. Instead, I’ve joined the local Leisure Centre - YAWA - which has me impressed. I’ve been getting back into Reformer Pilates and trying some Tai Chi, Qi Gong and Dance classes. What is your way of keeping the brain heart and body ticking?
What are you reading?
I’ve just read a great book — Heart the Lover by Lily King. It was a real page turner but I have to warn you it’s not a romance. If you read my social media you’ll see I said of it: “—loved everything about this book, except maybe the cover, which for me does not begin to convey the overall tone and angst of the story. Couldn’t put it down. Hooked me early and kept me gripped to the the very end before more or less ripping my heart out. Brilliant! Very highly recommend!” That is, if you can deal with it not having a HEA.
I recently received a very cute package in the post — my lovely friend, Anna Freeman’s latest novel, The Time After Now AND a gift bag which includes under eye patches/mask (How did they know?!). Anyhow, I’m looking forward to losing even more sleep reading Anne’s latest novel. I’ll be attending her book launch on 29th August in Collingwood — yippee! — and then I have the honour of hosting her at the Mornington Library for an author chat in September, so that’s top of my TBR list atm.
Another book I’ve bought and can’t wait to dive into is Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke. The premise had me intrigued — social media influencer confronted by pioneer reality. Have you read it? Can you give me the low down?
I’d love to hear your thoughts and also know what books you’ve loved this month. Spill the tea!
What are you watching?
I’m currently either rewatching Rivals, because why not, or cringing as I watch Farmer Wants a Wife. As far as the latter goes, I think it’s the combination of awesome scenery and awful behaviour that has me goggling. Miranda, seriously, could anyone be more narcisistic?
But I’m on the lookout for something heartwarming and uplifting. I feel like I need something to lift me out of the doldrums of an Australian winter. Do you have any recommendations? Please!
